The Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) conducted a business mission to Japan, covering Kyoto, Shiga, and Osaka, bringing together Singapore-based companies including Innovax Pte Ltd. The programme aimed to explore opportunities in advanced manufacturing, precision engineering, sustainability, and research and development, while facilitating engagement with Japanese industry partners.

The mission formed part of SMF’s internationalisation efforts to support Singapore enterprises in accessing overseas markets. It included curated business-to-business (B2B) meetings, site visits to manufacturing facilities, and engagement sessions with Japanese companies across various sectors. Participants observed operational practices, technological applications, and innovation processes within Japan’s manufacturing ecosystem.

Participants noted that Japan’s business environment places strong emphasis on trust, reliability, and long-term relationships. It was observed that companies entering the market are required to adopt a structured and patient approach, as decision-making processes are typically deliberate. Establishing credibility through consistency, proven quality, and long-term commitment was identified as essential for successful market engagement.

The mission also highlighted Japan’s high standards in manufacturing, particularly in precision, process discipline, and quality assurance. Facility visits demonstrated the integration of automation, innovation, and standardised processes, supported by a culture of continuous improvement and strong workforce craftsmanship.

Through B2B engagements, Singapore companies connected with Japanese manufacturers, technology providers, and supply chain partners. Discussions explored potential collaboration in manufacturing solutions, regional operations, and supply chain integration. While engagements remain at an exploratory stage, participants indicated that the mission established a foundation for future partnerships and pilot initiatives.

SMF’s role in facilitating structured engagements and curated introductions was noted as a key enabler for accessing networks and insights. Participation as part of a Singapore delegation also contributed to credibility in engagements with Japanese counterparts. In addition, the mission enabled knowledge-sharing among participating companies, supporting peer learning and exchange of perspectives.

The SMF Japan Business Mission 2026 contributed to strengthening engagement between Singapore and Japan’s manufacturing sectors, while providing participating companies with practical insights into market practices and collaboration opportunities. Follow-up engagements are expected to further develop partnerships, as SMF continues to support Singapore enterprises in their internationalisation efforts.
