Minister of State Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim attended the Ninth Indian Ocean Conference held in Mauritius from 10 to 12 April 2026, where he called for stronger cooperation among nations in the region.

The conference, themed “Collective Stewardship for Indian Ocean Governance,” brought together leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss shared challenges such as maritime security, environmental sustainability, and economic resilience.

Speaking at the Second Plenary Session on 11 April, Zhulkarnain stressed the importance of working together to maintain a rules-based international system. He highlighted the role of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in protecting freedom of navigation and ensuring regional stability and economic growth.

Singapore, as a maritime nation, reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships and promoting peace and prosperity across the Indian Ocean region. The country has been an early supporter of the conference and continues to actively participate in its discussions.

During his visit, Zhulkarnain held meetings with several international leaders, including Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Adviser Khalilur Rahman, Egypt’s Deputy Minister for African Affairs Mohamed Abu Bakr, and Mauritius Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful. He also met Mauritius Transport Minister Mahomed Osman Cassam Mahomed.

Further meetings are scheduled with representatives from Bhutan, Nepal, Seychelles, and Tanzania as part of ongoing discussions to enhance regional cooperation.
