President of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady of the Philippines Louise Araneta-Marcos welcomed leaders, representatives, and spouses from ASEAN Member States during the opening of the 48th ASEAN Summit at the Mactan Expo in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. The summit brought together regional leaders to discuss cooperation on peace, security, economic resilience, and people-centred development under the Philippine chairmanship of ASEAN.

The summit was held under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together” and formed part of the ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings hosted by the Philippines. Participating leaders and representatives included His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, accompanied by His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen; His Excellency Prime Minister Hun Manet and Her Excellency Dr Pich Chanmony; His Excellency President Prabowo Subianto; His Excellency Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone; His Excellency Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Her Excellency Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail; His Excellency U Hau Khan Sum; His Excellency Prime Minister Lawrence Wong; His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul; His Excellency Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão; and His Excellency Lê Minh Hưng.

In his remarks, President Marcos underscored the importance of stronger regional cooperation in addressing geopolitical uncertainties and emerging regional challenges. Discussions during the plenary session focused on advancing peace and security, strengthening economic resilience, and promoting regional prosperity and people empowerment.

ASEAN leaders also discussed the impact of ongoing tensions in the Middle East on global trade flows, energy supply chains, and food security. President Marcos reiterated ASEAN’s support for the peaceful settlement of disputes, the protection of civilians, and the restoration of safe transit passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Additional discussions centred on enhancing regional energy resilience, stabilising food systems, and ensuring the safety and welfare of ASEAN nationals abroad. The Philippine chairmanship reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ASEAN cooperation and practical collaboration in response to regional and global developments.

The summit was expected to continue with a series of plenary sessions, ministerial meetings, and dialogues aimed at reinforcing ASEAN unity and advancing collective regional priorities.
