
Singapore and DPRK discuss regional peace, diplomacy, and cooperation during Pyongyang meeting
Singapore Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan made a working visit to Pyongyang, the capital of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), from 26 to 27 May 2026. The visit took place at the invitation of DPRK Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui.

During the visit, Dr Balakrishnan held a bilateral meeting with Minister Choe. Both leaders had open and wide-ranging discussions on regional and international developments, including issues related to the Korean Peninsula. The ministers also reaffirmed the long-standing friendly relations between Singapore and the DPRK. Both countries marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2025.
Dr Balakrishnan encouraged the DPRK to continue engaging constructively with countries in the region and to keep communication channels open for dialogue. He also invited Minister Choe to attend the ASEAN Regional Forum, of which the DPRK is a member. Minister Choe later hosted Dr Balakrishnan at a welcome banquet.

The Singapore Foreign Minister also met Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly, Jo Yong Won. During the meeting, Chairman Jo shared updates on political developments in the DPRK.
Dr Balakrishnan highlighted the importance of maintaining dialogue and communication among countries during a time of global uncertainty to preserve peace and stability. Both leaders also recalled DPRK leader Kim Jong Un’s historic visit to Singapore for the first US-DPRK Summit held in 2018.
