Singapore’s maritime regulator and the world’s largest container shipping company have signed a new agreement to accelerate decarbonisation, digitalisation, and talent development across the maritime sector.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening collaboration in maritime decarbonisation, digital innovation, operational efficiency, and workforce development.
The agreement was signed on 25 May 2026 by Mr Ang Wee Keong, Chief Executive of MPA, and Mr Soren Toft, Chief Executive Officer of MSC, reinforcing the long-standing partnership between Singapore and one of the world’s leading shipping companies.
The MOU reflects a shared commitment to supporting a sustainable and future-ready maritime ecosystem while enhancing MSC’s operational and commercial activities in Singapore. The signing also coincides with the 30th anniversary of MSC’s Asia Regional Office and local operations in Singapore, highlighting the city-state’s strategic importance to the company’s regional and global network.
Under the partnership, both organisations will explore opportunities to strengthen maritime connectivity through new routes and services while advancing the adoption of alternative marine fuels, including bio-LNG. The collaboration will also focus on technologies designed to improve vessel energy efficiency and optimise operational performance, supporting broader industry efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
Digitalisation is another key pillar of the agreement. MPA and MSC will work together on initiatives to enhance operational efficiency through streamlined vessel arrivals and improved port processes, contributing to smarter and more connected maritime operations.
The partnership also places significant emphasis on talent development. MSC will support internship and scholarship opportunities through the Singapore Maritime Foundation’s MaritimeONE platform, helping to attract and nurture the next generation of maritime professionals.
Mr Ang said the collaboration would strengthen Maritime Singapore’s position as a trusted global maritime hub, while Mr Toft noted that the agreement reflects MSC’s long-term commitment to Singapore and its vision for a resilient and sustainable future for global shipping.
