ASEAN Secretariat and Indian Mission to ASEAN celebrated International Day of Yoga to promote wellness and ASEAN-India ties
The International Day of Yoga was celebrated at the ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta at the initiative of the Indian Mission to ASEAN. The event brought together representatives of ASEAN Member States, the diplomatic corps, and ASEAN Secretariat staff to promote wellness, cultural understanding, and people-to-people ties under the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The celebration was attended by Ambassador of India to ASEAN Srinivas Gotru, members of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN or their representatives, members of the diplomatic corps in Jakarta, and staff of the ASEAN Secretariat and the Indian Mission to ASEAN. On behalf of ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community San Lwin attended the event and delivered remarks.
In his remarks, Deputy Secretary San Lwin noted that the celebration reflected the strong and enduring relations between ASEAN and India and contributed meaningfully to people-to-people engagement and cultural understanding. He highlighted the growing popularity of yoga across ASEAN Member States and its positive contributions to physical well-being, mental health, and emotional resilience.
He further noted that yoga complemented ASEAN’s efforts to build a healthy, caring, sustainable, and productive community. He underscored that the practice supported the priorities of the ASEAN Health Sector in preventing and controlling noncommunicable diseases through physical activity, while also promoting mental health and well-being.
This year marked the fourth consecutive celebration of the International Day of Yoga at the ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat, following previous editions held annually since 2023. The programme featured a guided yoga session, bringing participants together in a shared spirit of wellness and mindfulness while fostering friendship, mutual understanding, and ASEAN-India solidarity.
