The Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Singapore, H.E. Askar Kuttykadam, recently met with Ms. Nina Yang, Deputy CEO of the Alatau City Authority, to discuss ongoing collaboration in the development of Alatau City, one of Kazakhstan’s most ambitious smart city projects. The meeting focused on the current progress of the development and opportunities to further strengthen cooperation in building a sustainable, technologically advanced urban centre.

A Singaporean national, Ms. Yang has played a significant role in the evolution of the project. Prior to her current appointment, she served as Chief Executive Officer of SJ CityGlobal, where she was instrumental in leading the development of the Alatau City master plan. Her continued involvement reflects the enduring contribution of Singaporean urban planning expertise to one of Central Asia’s largest city-building initiatives.

Located just north of Almaty, Alatau City is being developed as a next-generation integrated metropolis designed to support economic growth, innovation and sustainable living. The master plan, prepared by Surbana Jurong, draws inspiration from Singapore’s internationally recognised approach to urban planning, incorporating smart technologies, efficient infrastructure and environmentally sustainable design principles.

Covering approximately 88,000 hectares—an area larger than Singapore itself—Alatau City is expected to accommodate more than two million residents by 2050. Strategically positioned along the major transport corridor linking Kazakhstan with China, the city is envisioned as a key Eurasian trade, logistics and innovation hub, supporting regional connectivity under the broader New Silk Road framework while reinforcing Kazakhstan’s long-term economic development ambitions.
