Hidden within the lush Chemerong Forest Reserve in Terengganu, the Chemerong-Berembun-Langsir (CBL) Trail offers one of Malaysia’s most challenging and rewarding trekking experiences. Combining spectacular waterfalls, ancient rainforest and rugged mountain terrain, it is a must for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
For experienced hikers seeking an unforgettable rainforest expedition, the Chemerong-Berembun-Langsir (CBL) Trail in Terengganu promises an adventure unlike any other. Situated within the pristine Chemerong Forest Reserve in Hulu Dungun, this renowned trekking route showcases some of Malaysia’s most breathtaking natural landscapes.
The adventure begins with a scenic trek through the Chemerong Tropical Forest, leading hikers to the magnificent Chemerong Waterfall after approximately two hours. Standing at an impressive 370 metres (1,214 feet), the cascading waterfall is among the tallest in Malaysia, rewarding trekkers with spectacular views and a refreshing natural setting.
For those looking to experience the full CBL route, the expedition typically spans three days and two nights across approximately 27 kilometres of rugged rainforest terrain. Along the journey, hikers will ascend challenging mountain trails, unwind beside the crystal-clear Jeram Lesung Pool, enjoy a natural ‘fish spa’, and encounter towering Chengal trees as well as fascinating hollow tree formations that have stood for generations.
The CBL Trail is widely regarded as one of Malaysia’s more demanding hiking routes and is recommended only for individuals with prior trekking experience and a good level of physical fitness. Prospective hikers are encouraged to have completed at least 2,000 metres of hiking before attempting the trail.
The ideal hiking season falls between May and July, when weather conditions are generally more favourable. During the monsoon season, from late October until mid-March, hiking activities are suspended due to safety concerns arising from heavy rainfall.
Visitors are required to pay a modest entrance fee to access Chemerong Waterfall, while all hikers must be accompanied by a certified guide regardless of experience. Porter services are also available for those requiring assistance with camping equipment and supplies. Those planning an overnight stay at the designated campsite must obtain a camping permit at least three weeks before their intended visit.
Located approximately 378 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur, Chemerong Forest Reserve can be reached in around four hours by road, making it an ideal destination for adventurous travellers looking to discover one of Terengganu’s finest natural treasures.
