Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, welcomed 12 Permanent Representatives to the United Nations from member states of the Forum of Small States (FOSS) during their visit to Singapore for the 17th FOSS Fellowship Programme. The engagement provided an opportunity to exchange views on issues affecting small states and reaffirm Singapore’s commitment to strengthening the rules-based international order.
The meeting formed part of the 17th FOSS Fellowship Programme, an initiative that brings together senior diplomats from member states to discuss common challenges and enhance cooperation among small states. The programme continues to serve as a platform for dialogue, capacity building, and the exchange of perspectives on global affairs.
During the discussions, Dr Balakrishnan and the participating Permanent Representatives exchanged views on the evolving challenges confronting small states, including the importance of safeguarding international law and maintaining an effective rules-based multilateral system. The discussions also explored ways to ensure that the United Nations remains responsive and capable of addressing complex global issues.
Dr Balakrishnan emphasised the importance of close cooperation among FOSS members in advancing the shared interests of small states within the international community. He noted that Singapore remains committed to working alongside fellow members to promote effective multilateralism and strengthen the role of the United Nations in addressing global challenges.
The engagement underscored the value of dialogue and collaboration among small states in navigating an increasingly complex international environment. Through platforms such as the FOSS Fellowship Programme, Singapore continues to support efforts that foster greater understanding, cooperation, and collective action among member states.
