The reopened community club highlighted Singapore’s commitment to strengthening community bonds, volunteerism, and neighbourhood development
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong joined residents on 2 August 2026 for the reopening of Fuchun Community Club, marking a new chapter in the community hub’s longstanding history of serving residents in the area. The event celebrated the club’s legacy while reaffirming the importance of community partnerships and active citizen participation in building stronger neighbourhoods.
The reopening ceremony brought together residents, community organisations, partners, and students to showcase initiatives aimed at fostering stronger social connections and enhancing community well-being. The event reflected Singapore’s continued emphasis on community engagement and grassroots participation through the People’s Association’s network of community clubs.
Fuchun Community Club traces its origins to Hock Choon Village Community Centre, one of the People’s Association’s earliest rural community centres, which was officially opened by Singapore’s founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in 1962. Over the decades, the community club has evolved alongside Singapore’s national development while remaining firmly rooted in serving local residents.
In a social media post following the event, Prime Minister Wong noted that the club’s history mirrors Singapore’s own journey of growth and progress while remaining anchored in the community. He also welcomed the participation of community organisations, partners, and students who presented ideas to strengthen social bonds and improve the lives of residents.
Prime Minister Wong said the initiatives demonstrated what makes a community club unique, describing it as “a place where the spirit of gotong royong comes alive every day.” He emphasised that community clubs continue to serve as important platforms for residents to collaborate, volunteer, and support one another.
Highlighting the shared responsibility of nation-building, Prime Minister Wong said the Government could provide infrastructure and support, but that it is people coming together, caring for one another, and contributing to their communities that truly make a place feel like home.
