Hands-on workshop introduces Singapore participants to Madhubani painting and India’s traditional artistic heritage.
The High Commission of India in Singapore collaborated with Bijhar Association, Singapore, to organise a hands-on Madhubani painting workshop as part of India’s Independence Day 2026 celebrations, bringing participants together to explore one of India’s traditional art forms.
The workshop was guided by artist Shivali Mathur and introduced participants of different ages to the distinctive motifs, patterns and storytelling traditions associated with Madhubani art. The session provided an opportunity for participants to learn the techniques of the art form while engaging with an important element of India’s cultural heritage.
Madhubani painting, traditionally associated with the Mithila region of India, is recognised for its intricate lines, symbolic motifs and vivid compositions. The workshop allowed participants to experience the art form through hands-on practice and gain a deeper appreciation of the cultural traditions and artistic expressions passed down through generations.
The initiative formed part of the High Commission’s wider Independence Day 2026 cultural activities and provided a platform for community engagement through Indian art and heritage. Participants created their own Madhubani-inspired paintings while learning about the cultural significance behind the art form.
