South Africa Focus Week generated partnerships in agriculture, skills, aviation, leadership and programmes.
South Africa Focus Week 2026 generated new partnerships, project opportunities and social-impact initiatives between South African and Singaporean institutions. Held in Singapore, the programme focused on practical cooperation in agriculture and food security, youth employability, applied sciences, aviation, women’s leadership, education and the creative economy.
A key outcome was a three-year Memorandum of Understanding between the University of the Free State (UFS) and the GRAIN International Centre of Excellence at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The agreement established a framework for agricultural research, innovation and technology transfer, with areas including crop improvement, breeding and genetics, clean planting material, climate-resilient agriculture and controlled-environment farming.
The programme also supported women’s leadership through a Partnership Agreement between She Brilliance and the Charlotte Mannya Maxeke Institute. The initiative will establish a mentorship programme to develop women’s leadership capabilities, professional networks and participation in decision-making spaces.
Youth skills and employability were another focus. The Institute for the Future of Work (IFOW) at Tshwane University of Technology announced a prototype Youth Employability Skills Programme incorporating design thinking, applied micro-projects and real-world mentorship. Engagements involving IFOW, Tata Consultancy Services Asia Pacific and the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) explored future skills, applied research and industry-linked learning.
IFOW and UFS also visited SIT in the Punggol Digital District to examine its applied-learning and applied-sciences model. Discussions identified potential cooperation in future skills, youth employability, applied research and programmes linked to labour-market needs. The South African High Commission will continue facilitating the engagements, with Tata Consultancy Services South Africa considered as a potential industry partner.
In aviation, the Singapore Institute of Aerospace Engineers (SIAEi) and Wings of Hope announced a collaboration focused on training and developing young people for opportunities in the aviation and aerospace sector. The She Brilliance Women Exchange Programme is also scheduled to begin in August 2027, with Singaporean women leaders travelling to South Africa during Women’s Month.
The programme also included a social-impact initiative involving Wise Oaks International. A painting clinic involving about 30 young artists raised S$3,450 through an auction, with 50 per cent of the proceeds to be donated to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.
