Singapore Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing meets Vietnam’s General Nguyen Tan Cuong to discuss bilateral ties and regional security.
Vietnam People’s Army Chief of the General Staff and Vice Minister of National Defence General (GEN) Nguyen Tan Cuong called on Singapore Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing on 5 November 2026 at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), during an introductory visit to Singapore from 4 to 5 November. The meeting focused on bilateral defence relations, regional security developments and cooperation under the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus frameworks.

Prior to the meeting, GEN Cuong inspected a Guard of Honour at MINDEF. During their discussions, both officials reaffirmed the warm and friendly defence relations between Singapore and Vietnam and exchanged views on regional security issues of mutual interest.
As part of his two-day visit, GEN Cuong also held a roundtable discussion with Singapore Chief of Defence Force Vice Admiral Aaron Beng. His programme included visits to the Multi-Mission Range Complex and ST Engineering Hub, where he was introduced to Singapore’s defence facilities and industry.

Singapore and Vietnam have maintained defence cooperation under the Defence Cooperation Agreement signed in 2009 and renewed in 2022. Their bilateral relations were further elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2025, providing an expanded framework for cooperation between the two countries.
The defence establishments of Singapore and Vietnam maintain regular engagement through high-level visits, bilateral dialogues, professional exchanges and multilateral exercises. Both countries also participate in regional defence platforms, including the ADMM and ADMM-Plus, which provide opportunities for ASEAN member states and their partners to discuss common security concerns and develop practical cooperation.
GEN Cuong’s introductory visit provided an opportunity for both sides to review their defence ties and exchange perspectives on regional security developments, while continuing their engagement through bilateral and multilateral defence cooperation mechanisms.
