He noted the frequent high-level exchanges between the two countries, including President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s historic state visit to Singapore in 2015, and expressed optimism about future engagements as the countries approach the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026.

Mr Tan also reflected on the shared attributes of both nations: strategically located maritime states with diverse, multi-religious societies. He acknowledged Egypt’s leadership in Islamic education through Al-Azhar University and noted Singapore’s recent efforts in interfaith dialogue, including hosting Grand Imam Nazir Ayyad for an international conference. Egypt’s vibrant Coptic Christian heritage was also recognised as a symbol of pluralism.

The event further highlighted Egypt’s humanitarian leadership in the region, particularly its facilitation of Singapore’s aid efforts to Gaza. To date, Singapore has dispatched eight tranches of humanitarian support amounting to over S$22 million, with plans for expanded collaboration in medical and relief assistance.

In addition to the formalities, the reception showcased Egypt’s rich cultural heritage, featuring displays of traditional Egyptian art and culinary delights. Guests were treated to a variety of authentic Egyptian dishes and delicacies, offering a taste of Egypt’s diverse food culture. The artistic presentations added a vibrant and meaningful dimension to the evening, reinforcing the importance of cultural diplomacy in strengthening bilateral ties.

Mr Tan concluded his remarks by expressing his appreciation to Ambassador Ahmed and Madam Sawa for their hospitality and efforts in nurturing Egypt-Singapore relations. He also extended warm wishes for Egypt’s continued peace and prosperity, and to many more years of friendship between the two nations.
