The High Commission of India brings New Delhi’s prestigious National School of Drama to Singapore this August, marking a cultural milestone with three acclaimed productions.
Singapore, August 2025 — For the first time, India’s National School of Drama (NSD) will perform in Singapore as part of the Indian Theatre Festival, organised by the High Commission of India. The festival will run from 28–30 August 2025 at the historic Capitol Theatre, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of India–Singapore diplomatic relations and the 60th anniversary of NSD’s Repertory Company.

Over three evenings, audiences will experience the richness of Indian theatre through three celebrated Hindi plays:
- Abhigyanasakuntalam — Kalidasa’s timeless Sanskrit classic, retold with lyrical elegance and depth.
- Babuji — A moving narrative exploring human dignity, justice, and social values.
- Tajmahal ka Tender — A witty satire imagining Emperor Shah Jahan navigating modern-day bureaucracy to build the Taj Mahal.
Each production will be staged with English subtitles to ensure accessibility for non-Hindi-speaking audiences, while preserving the authenticity of the original scripts.
Founded in 1959, the National School of Drama is India’s premier theatre training institution under the Ministry of Culture. Its Repertory Company, established in 1964, has produced and performed hundreds of plays spanning classical Sanskrit works, modern Indian theatre, and international masterpieces, earning acclaim both in India and abroad.

The High Commission of India noted that the festival is more than an artistic presentation — it is also an opportunity for Singapore audiences to engage with India’s cultural heritage, contemporary social themes, and comedic traditions. The choice of the Capitol Theatre as the venue adds further grandeur, with its Art Deco setting complementing the elaborate sets, costumes, and performances for which NSD is renowned.
With its combination of history, artistry, and entertainment, the Indian Theatre Festival offers a rare opportunity to witness one of India’s most respected cultural institutions on Singaporean soil.
