President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the commemoration of National Heroes Day 2025, honouring both historical and contemporary heroes who embody courage, unity, and sacrifice
MANILA – The Philippines observed National Heroes Day on 25 August 2025, with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. leading a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. The annual event pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of Filipinos who shaped the nation’s freedom and independence.
In his keynote address, President Marcos highlighted the remarkable story of Teresa Magbanua, who left her life in Iloilo to take up arms in defence of the country. He emphasised that her example reflects the countless unnamed Filipinos who, though absent from history books, played a pivotal role in the struggle for independence. “Ngayong Araw ng mga Bayani, binibigyan natin ng pugay ang mga Pilipinong hindi naisulat ang pangalan sa mga pahina ng kasaysayan ngunit naging mitsa ng apoy na bumuhay sa ating kasarinlan,” he said.

The President also paid tribute to present-day heroes, acknowledging those who continue to serve with dedication and compassion. “I also acknowledge those who are truly dedicated—those who serve, care, and love our nation,” he added, underscoring the importance of recognising both past and present patriots.
The commemoration was attended by senior officials, including Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin, Philippine Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Antonio G. Nafarrete, National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Chair Regalado Trota Jose Jr., Taguig City Mayor Laarni Lopez Cayetano, and officials from the Department of National Defense (DND) led by Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. The event served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by generations of Filipinos in the pursuit of unity, sovereignty, and freedom.

As part of the observance, the Certificate of Transfer of Ownership for the Memorial of the Unsung and Nameless Heroes and Martyrs was formally signed by PVAO Administrator Undersecretary Reynaldo B. Mapagu and NHCP Chairperson Regalado Trota Jose Jr., witnessed by NHCP officials and shrine curators. The memorial, sculpted by artist Frederic Caedo, now stands at the Libingan ng mga Bayani as a permanent tribute to unnamed martyrs who gave their lives for the nation.
The day also extended beyond the ceremony in Manila, as the Philippine Embassy in Singapore joined the observance, honouring overseas Filipino workers and foreign service personnel for their enduring sacrifices and contributions to national development.
