
The 3rd ASEAN–Japan Ministerial Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change (AJMDEC) highlighted joint commitments to resilience, sustainability, and low-carbon development.
LANGKAWI, Malaysia, 4 September 2025 – ASEAN and Japan convened the 3rd ASEAN–Japan Ministerial Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change (AJMDEC) in Langkawi, Malaysia, bringing together ministers, senior officials, and representatives to advance collaboration on environmental and climate-related challenges.
The dialogue reviewed ongoing cooperation and set out future priorities in line with regional and global sustainability goals. Both sides emphasised the need to strengthen climate resilience, support low-carbon pathways, and promote sustainable solutions across sectors.

ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn underscored the importance of the ASEAN–Japan partnership in addressing pressing environmental issues. He welcomed Japan’s continued support through the Strategic Program for ASEAN Climate and Environment (SPACE), which provides targeted initiatives to build capacity and support member states’ climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.
The meeting also highlighted the alignment of ASEAN–Japan cooperation with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which places sustainability and resilience at the core of the region’s long-term development agenda. Japan reaffirmed its commitment to supporting ASEAN’s initiatives through technical assistance, knowledge sharing, and green investments.


By fostering dialogue on climate and environment, AJMDEC 2025 served as a platform to consolidate collective efforts in tackling shared challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and the transition towards greener economies. Both ASEAN and Japan expressed confidence that their collaboration will continue to generate practical and sustainable outcomes for the region.
