IOS SAGAR voyage strengthens India-ASEAN maritime cooperation through joint naval training initiative
The IOS SAGAR initiative has commenced its voyage from India towards Singapore, carrying a multinational crew of 39 personnel from 16 countries. The programme aims to enhance operational collaboration and maritime training among partner nations.

Designed as a joint training platform, IOS SAGAR enables naval personnel from friendly foreign countries to train and sail together onboard an Indian naval vessel. The initiative reflects the operationalisation of MAHASAGAR, which promotes collective readiness, shared learning, and cooperation in maritime security.

The participation of officers from ASEAN countries, including Singapore, underscores growing defence ties between India and Southeast Asia. The engagement also aligns with the ASEAN-India Year of Maritime Cooperation, highlighting efforts to strengthen regional maritime partnerships.
Through joint exercises and onboard training, participants are expected to exchange expertise and build interoperability in addressing common maritime challenges, including security and navigation.
The programme reflects India’s broader commitment to fostering collaborative security frameworks in the Indo-Pacific, while reinforcing bilateral and multilateral defence cooperation with ASEAN partners.
