India highlighted the urgency of United Nations and global financial reforms during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting under the BRICS India 2026 framework
India chaired the BRICS India 2026 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) session on “Reforms of Global Governance and Multilateral System”, where discussions focused on strengthening multilateral cooperation and advancing institutional reforms in response to evolving global challenges. During the session, India underscored the importance of credible and reformed multilateralism in an increasingly interconnected, complex and multipolar world.

The session formed part of the broader BRICS engagement process under the BRICS India 2026 framework, bringing together foreign ministers and senior representatives from member states to deliberate on global governance, economic cooperation and international coordination. The discussions were held within the context of ongoing efforts among BRICS countries to enhance collaboration on international political and economic issues.

During the meeting, India reaffirmed the centrality of reforms within the United Nations system, particularly the expansion of both permanent and non-permanent categories of the UN Security Council. It stated that without such reforms, the effectiveness and credibility of the United Nations would remain constrained. India also emphasised the need to advance text-based negotiations to move UN reform discussions forward in a substantive manner.
On global economic governance, India highlighted the urgency of reforming the international financial architecture. It noted the importance of enabling multilateral development banks (MDBs) to become more responsive, robust and adequately equipped to address emerging global challenges. India further called for improved accessibility to development and climate finance, particularly for developing economies.
Addressing international trade issues, India reiterated support for a rules-based, fair, open and inclusive international trading system with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core. The discussion also touched on challenges related to non-market practices, supply chain concentration and uncertainties in market access.
India stated that the current global environment reinforced the importance of cooperation, dialogue and institutional reform. The session concluded with a shared emphasis on continued engagement among BRICS members and the importance of strengthening multilateral frameworks to address future global challenges.
