Ministry prioritises risk mitigation and emergency response training for sustainable tourism growth
On Saturday, 2 May 2026, the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism officially launched the 2026 Tourism Safety Programme – a nationwide initiative to strengthen safety standards, risk mitigation, and emergency response at all tourist destinations. According to the ministry, the programme ensures uniform safety procedures for visitors while upskilling tourism human resources across the archipelago.
The safety programme is one of five flagship initiatives for 2026, alongside tourism village development, quality tourism, “Event by Indonesia”, and Tourism 5.0. The Indonesian Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana previously confirmed that competency-based training and certification for tour guides – especially for high-risk and extreme tourism activities – would be a core focus.
The Indonesian Deputy for Resources and Institutional Affairs, Martini Mohamad Paham, stated that travellers now seek authentic, safe, and memorable experiences. “Our challenge is no longer just about offering beautiful destinations, but ensuring that tourists have a safe, comfortable, and high-quality experience,” Paham said. She emphasised that success requires cross-sector synergy, adding: “We expect all heads of tourism offices to play an active role as initiators in their respective regions. Tourism safety is not the responsibility of a single party, but a collective one.”
Assistant Deputy for Community Capacity Building at the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism, Ika Kusuma Permana Sari, stressed regional preparedness. “We want to ensure that every region is ready to run this programme optimally so that it has a direct impact on improving the quality and safety of tourist destinations,” Ika said.
The 2026 Tourism Safety Programme strengthens Indonesia’s competitiveness as a safe, high-quality destination. Through central-regional collaboration and certified training in occupational health, safety, and environmental sustainability, the ministry aims to build traveller confidence and support sustainable tourism growth.
