MOS Alvin Tan discussed bilateral cooperation, urban development, social policy and business ties during Chile visit.
Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Development Alvin Tan visited Santiago, Chile, where he co-chaired the inaugural Singapore-Chile Political Consultations with Chilean Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Patricio Torres. During the visit, from Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MOS Tan reviewed bilateral relations and discussed cooperation in trade and investment, logistics, sustainable development, social policies and urban development.

At the inaugural Political Consultations, MOS Tan and Ambassador Torres took stock of progress in Singapore-Chile relations, reaffirmed the positive trajectory of bilateral ties and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest. MOS Tan said, “Singapore and Chile have a deep and wide partnership,” noting that the two countries remained connected through trade, investment and people despite the distance between them.
He also highlighted the breadth of bilateral cooperation through agreements and initiatives including the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), Pacific Alliance-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (PASFTA), Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA), Free Trade and Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIT-P), and Carbon Credits Implementation Agreements.
During the visit, MOS Tan met Chile’s Minister of Social Development and Family María Jesús Wulf, Undersecretary of Mining Álvaro González Gorroño, and Undersecretary of Housing and Urban Planning Natalia Aguilar Bravo. Discussions covered social policies, housing, trade and investment, sustainable development, and the development of cooperation in the mining sector.

MOS Tan also met Santiago Mayor Mario Desbordes and Providencia Mayor Jaime Bellolio. Their discussions included urban development, smart cities and municipal services. With Undersecretary Aguilar, MOS Tan discussed housing policies, including housing financing and Chile’s target of providing 400,000 homes, as well as Singapore’s experience with the Central Provident Fund (CPF) and housing grants.

The visit also included engagements with Singaporean companies operating in Chile and Colombia, including Pacific International Lines (PIL) and Trafigura. Discussions covered port operations, shipping, agri-trade and commodities. MOS Tan noted that PIL had established its regional hub in Santiago, while Trafigura was engaged with Chile’s critical metals and minerals sector.
MOS Tan also met Sergio Díaz Granados Guida, President of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), to discuss sustainable development, regional integration, economic cooperation, investment and knowledge exchange.
