Singapore appoints accomplished former Minister and Ambassador, Mr Lui Tuck Yew, as the new Singapore Ambassador to the United States, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to strengthen bilateral relations.
The Government of Singapore has announced the appointment of Mr. Lui Tuck Yew as the next Singapore Ambassador to the United States of America. Mr. Lui brings with him a wealth of experience and a distinguished career in both the political and public service sectors.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Lui served as Singapore’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China from 2019 to 2023, where he played a crucial role in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. Before that, he held the position of Singapore’s Ambassador to Japan from 2017 to 2019, contributing to the deepening of ties between Singapore and Japan.
Mr. Lui’s political career has been equally impressive. He served as the Minister for Transport from 2011 to 2015, during which he spearheaded several initiatives to enhance Singapore’s transportation infrastructure and ensure efficient connectivity. Concurrently, he held the role of Second Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2011 to 2012 and Second Minister for Defence in 2015, highlighting his commitment to both domestic and international affairs. From 2009 to 2011, Mr. Lui served as the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, driving the development of Singapore’s media and communication landscape.
Before entering politics, Mr. Lui held significant leadership positions in the public sector. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Housing and Development Board from 2005 to 2006, overseeing the planning and development of public housing in Singapore. Prior to that, he held the role of Chief Executive in the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore from 2003 to 2005, where he played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation and growth of Singapore’s bustling ports. During this time, he also served as the Deputy Secretary (Land) in the Ministry of Transport. Mr. Lui’s career took him to new heights when he was appointed Chief of Navy in 1999, a position he held until 2003.
Mr. Lui’s educational background is equally impressive. He graduated from Trinity College, University of Cambridge, with a degree in Chemistry in 1983, showcasing his strong foundation in the sciences. He further pursued his academic interests and obtained a Master’s degree in International Relations from the prestigious Fletcher School, Tufts University, United States of America, in 1994. To expand his knowledge and expertise in military affairs, Mr. Lui attended the Command Course at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1996.
Recognizing his invaluable contributions and dedication to public service, Mr. Lui has been honored with several prestigious awards. He was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) (Military) in 1993, in recognition of his outstanding service. In 2000, his contributions were once again acknowledged when he received the Public Administration Medal (Gold) (Military). In 2005, Mr. Lui was presented with the Long Service Medal, reflecting his unwavering commitment to serving the nation.
Mr. Lui is happily married to Madam Teng Soo Fen, and they are proud parents of two children. His family provides a strong support system, enabling him to undertake his diplomatic responsibilities with dedication and zeal.
