Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Visit to Singapore: Strengthening Bilateral Ties at the 10th Leaders’ Retreat

Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is set to undertake an official visit to Singapore from the 29th to the 30th of October 2023. This visit, extending at the invitation of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, marks the 10th Singapore-Malaysia Leaders’ Retreat and holds significant import for bilateral relations.

The Leaders’ Retreat, an annual event, serves as a crucial platform for both Prime Ministers to deliberate on bilateral matters and explore new avenues for cooperation. This year’s meeting gains additional prominence as it is the first face-to-face encounter since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. It offers a vital opportunity for both nations to evaluate and strengthen their collaborative efforts. Notably, the 9th Leaders’ Retreat took place in Putrajaya, Malaysia, in April 2019.

On the 30th of October 2023, Prime Minister Anwar will engage with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and convene with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The leaders, accompanied by their respective delegations, will participate in substantive bilateral discussions and witness the signing of crucial agreements pertaining to key areas of cooperation.

Accompanying Prime Minister Anwar is a distinguished delegation comprising Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Minister of Transport Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedick, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, Chief Minister of Johor Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, and Attorney General Datuk Terrirudin Mohd Salleh.

The Singaporean delegation is composed of Deputy Prime Minister & Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister & Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam, Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for National Development Desmond Lee, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Education and Foreign Affairs Dr Maliki Osman, Acting Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and Environment and for Manpower Dr Koh Poh Koon, and Attorney-General Lucien Wong.
