Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong delivered an inspiring speech at the Shaping Hearts arts festival on 11 November 2023. The event, hosted by North East CDC, marks its fifth year and has evolved into Singapore’s largest inclusive arts festival.
DPM Lawrence Wong commended the organizers, including Minister Masagos Zulkifli, SMS Koh Poh Koon, and Mayor Desmond Choo, for their dedication in making Shaping Hearts a platform that transcends visual art. The festival now boasts a diverse collection of over 350 paintings by 150 artists, coupled with dance and music performances.
The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the festival’s significance in challenging societal perceptions of persons with disabilities. He shared the inspiring story of Christina Lau, a talented artist who, despite physical challenges, found a new way to express herself through mouth painting. Lau, a former Prisons Officer, is not only an accomplished artist but also a two-time bronze medallist in table tennis at the ASEAN Para Games.
DPM Lawrence Wong stressed the collective responsibility of the Singaporean community to contribute to building a more inclusive society. He outlined the government’s plans under the Enabling Masterplan 2030, focusing on strengthening support services, enhancing employment opportunities, and creating barrier-free environments.
The Deputy Prime Minister acknowledged the concerns about rising prices and the cost of living, citing global uncertainties impacting food and energy supplies. He reassured Singaporeans of the government’s commitment, announcing measures such as the Assurance Package, Cost of Living Package, and utility and S&CC rebates to alleviate financial burdens.
In conclusion, DPM Lawrence Wong emphasized the importance of solidarity and unity in overcoming challenges. He encouraged Singaporeans to maintain a strong sense of community, care for the vulnerable, and work collectively towards a fairer and more inclusive future.
