A delegation from the University of Jaffna’s Medical Faculty visited Singapore in collaboration with SingHealth to discuss advancing healthcare services in Northern Sri Lanka

Singapore, 1 October 2024 – A delegation from the Medical Faculty of the University of Jaffna, led by Dean Prof. R. Surenthirakumaran, visited Singapore on 14th September 2024. The visit aimed to conduct a stakeholders’ meeting focused on advancing healthcare services in Northern Sri Lanka, in collaboration with SingHealth. The meeting was held at the Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple, with several prominent medical professionals, including Dr. Kumaran, Dr. S. Raguraman, Dr. Balasingam Balagobi, and Dr. Brammah R Thangarajah, participating.

Key Singaporean figures in the healthcare sector also attended the meeting, including Vijaya Rao, Director of the SingHealth International Collaboration Office. The Sri Lankan delegation discussed collaborative efforts with Singaporean institutions like KKH Women’s and Children’s Hospital, particularly on day surgery and maternal and child healthcare services. The initiative is part of a broader healthcare improvement effort through the Jaffna Regional Collaborating Centre (RCC), established in partnership with the SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute (SDGHI) of Singapore. The Jaffna RCC is the second of three planned centres aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure in Northern Sri Lanka.

On 16th September, the delegation presented their progress to Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Singapore, Senarath Dissanayake, at the Sri Lanka High Commission. Prof. Surenthirakumaran emphasised the RCC’s role in enhancing medical services and expressed hope for further collaboration with Singapore’s healthcare institutions to bolster the region’s healthcare sector. The High Commissioner expressed his appreciation for the delegation’s efforts and affirmed the mission’s commitment to expanding healthcare cooperation between Sri Lanka and Singapore.
