JAKARTA, Indonesia — The Permanent Mission of Thailand to ASEAN hosted the ASEAN Centre for Active Ageing and Innovation (ACAI) Networking Dialogue on 3 March 2025 at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta. The event served as a platform for strengthening regional collaboration on active ageing initiatives, with participation from ASEAN Member States, Dialogue and Development partners, and key stakeholders.

Dr. Somsak Akksilp, Executive Director of ACAI, led a briefing session to highlight the growing need for comprehensive ageing care policies across Southeast Asia. He underscored the role of ACAI in fostering innovative solutions and strategic partnerships to address demographic shifts and enhance the well-being of elderly populations.

ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn delivered a prerecorded address, emphasizing that all ASEAN countries are projected to become “ageing societies” within the next decade, with some reaching “super-aged” status. He noted that at least 20% of the population in some member states will be aged 65 or older within the next 10 years, highlighting the importance of active ageing policies.

Dr. Kao also commended the Permanent Mission of Thailand to ASEAN for organizing the event and introduced ACAI’s new management team, led by Dr. Somsak. He reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to integrating ageing-related issues into national development plans, strengthening healthcare systems for older adults, and promoting inter-generational cooperation.

The dialogue facilitated discussions on potential cooperation among ASEAN Member States, leveraging research, technology, and policy development to improve the quality of life for older adults. Representatives from various ASEAN bodies and partner organisations reaffirmed their commitment to integrating ageing-friendly policies into regional development agendas.

ACAI, established under ASEAN’s framework, plays a key role in promoting research, knowledge exchange, and policy recommendations related to active ageing. The Centre seeks to create a robust network of policymakers, academics, and industry leaders to drive sustainable solutions for an ageing society.

The event also served as an opportunity for ASEAN and its partners to reinforce their shared commitment to inclusive growth and human capital development, ensuring that ageing populations remain integral contributors to economic and social progress.
