The Philippine Embassy in Singapore joined the global commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the South China Sea Arbitral Award, reaffirming the enduring importance of international law, maritime rights, and the peaceful resolution of disputes under UNCLOS.
The Philippine Embassy in Singapore joined the Department of Foreign Affairs, Philippine Government agencies, the international community, and Filipinos around the world in commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award. Widely regarded as a landmark decision in international maritime law, the Award continues to serve as an important reference for interpreting the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), while reinforcing principles relating to maritime entitlements, environmental protection, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
A decade after the ruling, the Embassy highlighted that the Award remains more than a legal milestone. It stands as a lasting legacy that continues to shape discussions on the rule of law at sea and the responsible management of maritime resources. The decision underscores the importance of resolving disputes through established legal mechanisms and reaffirms the value of international law in promoting fairness, stability, and cooperation among nations.

The Embassy also emphasised the Award’s broader significance for the Philippines, ASEAN, and the wider international community. For Filipinos, it affirms the country’s lawful maritime rights and national dignity. For ASEAN, it strengthens the region’s collective commitment to peace, stability, and adherence to international law. Globally, it demonstrates that legal frameworks remain essential in fostering dialogue, safeguarding shared interests, and ensuring peaceful coexistence.
Philippine Ambassador to Singapore H.E. Medardo G. Macaraig described the anniversary as an opportunity to honour the courage and foresight of those who pursued the arbitration, recognise the wisdom of the Arbitral Tribunal, and pay tribute to the resilience of the Filipino people. He also called on future generations to protect the seas, uphold the rule of law, and work towards a region where cooperation prevails over conflict.
Marking the occasion, the Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the principles embodied in the Award under the message: “Our Seas. Our Rights. Our Future.”
