Located in the northernmost state of Malaysia, Timah Tasoh Lake is a man-made reservoir covering approximately 1,300 hectares. Established in 1987 and completed in 1992, the lake serves as an important water catchment area for the surrounding region.
The name Timah Tasoh comes from the two rivers that flow into the reservoir, Sungai Timah and Sungai Tasoh. Beyond its role in water management and flood prevention, the lake has become one of Perlis’ scenic natural attractions, surrounded by verdant landscapes and gently rolling hills.
With its expansive waters and peaceful surroundings, Timah Tasoh Lake is particularly appealing to visitors seeking a quiet retreat away from the bustle of city life. The lake is reported to provide refuge for between 135 and 145 bird species, with the main birdwatching season generally running from October to March. The surrounding wetlands and vegetation provide suitable conditions for a variety of birds travelling along regional migration routes.
Timah Tasoh Lake has also been recognised as an important area for birds and biological diversity by BirdLife International, a global partnership of conservation organisations. A bird sanctuary has been established in the area to help protect the habitat of migratory birds.
Beyond Tourism
Timah Tasoh Lake plays an important role beyond recreation and wildlife conservation. As a major water catchment area, it contributes to flood prevention and water management in Perlis. The reservoir has a reported capacity of up to 35.3 million litres of water.
Its waters and surrounding environment have also been identified as suitable for fish breeding and aquaculture activities, adding another dimension to the lake’s importance to the local area.

Timah Tasoh Lake can be reached by road via the North-South Expressway, with visitors travelling onwards towards Arau, Kangar and Kuala Perlis. Travellers using public transport can take the ETS to Bukit Keteri before continuing by taxi or e-hailing service.
