Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat delivered a keynote speech at Singapore Polytechnic’s 70th anniversary graduation ceremony, emphasizing the continuous relevance and evolution of polytechnic education in adapting to modern challenges.
Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies, Heng Swee Keat, addressed the faculty, students, and guests at Singapore Polytechnic’s 70th Anniversary Graduation Ceremony on May 7, 2024. The event was a significant milestone, not only for the graduates but also for the institution, marking its longstanding contribution to Singapore’s educational landscape.
In his speech, DPM Heng highlighted the journey and achievements of Singapore Polytechnic since its inception. Founded as the first polytechnic of Singapore, it played a crucial role in supporting the nation’s industrialisation and has grown from a modest cohort of 192 students to a robust community of over 235,000 alumni. He reminisced about his previous visit for the 60th anniversary and noted the advancements in polytechnic education over the decades, emphasizing its increasing importance in the face of rapid technological and industrial changes.
DPM Heng discussed the impact of digitalisation and the Fourth Industrial Revolution on the job market, stressing the need for continual learning and skill adaptation. He applauded the adaptability and proactive approach of Singapore Polytechnic in updating its curriculum and maintaining industry relevance through initiatives like co-location laboratories and partnerships with leading corporations such as Ericsson and Singtel.
A notable part of his message was the encouragement of lifelong learning, highlighted by the introduction of the SkillsFuture Level-Up Programme which supports ongoing education with significant financial credits. He praised the polytechnic’s efforts in providing nearly 82,000 CET places last year, demonstrating its commitment to equipping students for continuous personal and professional development.
DPM Heng concluded his speech by acknowledging the efforts of the graduates, particularly the Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering students, who achieved a remarkable employment rate of 95%. He inspired the graduates to remain adaptable, proactive, and ambitious in their careers and lives, emphasizing that their education at Singapore Polytechnic has well-prepared them to make meaningful contributions to society.
