In a compelling speech at the 15th Munich Young Leaders’ Roundtable, Minister for Defence Dr. Ng Eng Hen discusses the retreat of globalization, rising political polarization, and the critical role of future leaders in navigating a complex global landscape.
On 17 February 2024, at the Munich Young Leaders’ Roundtable, Dr. Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence, presented a thought-provoking opening address on the theme “A Changing Political Landscape”. Speaking to a select group of young leaders recognized as the “cream of the crop”, Dr. Ng Eng Hen expressed his concerns over the current state of global affairs, marking it as the lowest ebb in his memory. He highlighted the retreat of globalization and the rise of nativist policies as central challenges facing today’s generation.
Dr. Ng Eng Hen pointed out the disparities in wealth distribution and the growing skepticism towards globalization as key issues. He cited the inward turn of many countries, as evidenced by political shifts in the United States and the rise of far-right parties in Europe. The speech referenced remarks by Vice President Kamala Harris advocating for an outward-looking America, contrasting it with the protectionist and nationalist tendencies seen globally.
The Defence Minister stressed the importance of understanding the historical context that has shaped the current global landscape, including the post-World War II era that led to the establishment of international institutions aimed at fostering a better, more inclusive world. However, he noted that the optimism of the post-Cold War globalization era has been replaced by a more fragmented and polarized global mood.
Dr. Ng Eng Hen engaged the young leaders in a discussion on potential solutions and strategies to address these challenges. He emphasized the importance of leadership that can navigate the complexities of the current political and social landscape, acknowledging the difficult choices leaders must make in a world marked by significant discontent with governmental institutions and democracy.
Throughout his address, Dr. Ng Eng Hen underscored the critical role of the next generation of leaders in shaping a future that responds to the challenges of today while striving for a more inclusive and prosperous world for all.
