Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, opened the “Maritime Heritage at the ASEAN Heritage Parks” exhibition, showcasing the region’s rich maritime biodiversity at the ASEAN Headquarters.

The Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, officially inaugurated the “Maritime Heritage at the ASEAN Heritage Parks” exhibition, organised by the Philippines Mission to ASEAN. The event, held at the ASEAN Headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia, runs from 22 to 25 October 2024 and celebrates the region’s rich maritime biodiversity, preserved and promoted through the ASEAN Heritage Parks.

The exhibition features the unique marine ecosystems and biodiversity of ASEAN Member States, highlighting two significant Heritage Parks from the Philippines—Tubbataha Reef and Agusan Marsh. These parks are renowned for their ecological importance and are key contributors to the region’s efforts in conservation. Additionally, the exhibition presents other ASEAN Member States’ Heritage Parks that are either maritime or aquatic-related, reflecting ASEAN’s commitment to preserving its diverse natural heritage.

In his speech, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn emphasised the significance of protecting the region’s natural resources, particularly the maritime ecosystems, which are vital for the environmental sustainability and cultural identity of ASEAN nations. He also praised the collective efforts of ASEAN Member States in safeguarding these natural treasures through initiatives such as the ASEAN Heritage Parks programme.

The exhibition serves as a platform for raising awareness about ASEAN’s maritime heritage and the importance of sustainable environmental practices in preserving these sites for future generations.
