Chinese Ambassador to Singapore H.E. Cao Zhongming toured the newly restored monument with National Heritage Board officials, reaffirming the enduring ties between China and Singapore first forged by Deng Xiaoping’s landmark 1978 visit
H.E. Cao Zhongming, Chinese Ambassador to Singapore, visited the Deng Xiaoping Commemorative Marker along the Singapore River, accompanied by officials from Singapore’s National Heritage Board (NHB) and colleagues from the Chinese Embassy. The visit followed recent restoration works carried out on the monument by the NHB.
Ambassador Cao was joined by Mr Goh Chour Thong, Director of International and Museum Relations at the NHB, and Mr Wan Pow Chween, Architectural Consultant for the Preservation of Sites and Monuments. The Ambassador expressed his appreciation to the NHB for its efforts in restoring the marker, noting the significance of preserving such sites of historical importance between the two countries.
Erected in 2010, the marker commemorates the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore. It stands as a lasting tribute to Deng Xiaoping’s 1978 visit to Singapore, a milestone that pushed in a new era of friendly relations and cooperation between the two nations.
Reflecting on the significance of the visit, Ambassador Cao expressed hope that China-Singapore relations would continue to endure and remain steady, guided by the leadership of both countries. The visit shows the continued importance placed on historical ties and cultural heritage in strengthening bilateral relations between China and Singapore.
The restoration of the Deng Xiaoping Commemorative Marker reflects the broader significance both countries place on preserving the milestones that have shaped their diplomatic relationship, as China and Singapore continue to build on decades of cooperation and friendship.
