Minister Maliki Osman attended the sixth Indian Ocean Conference in Bangladesh and had bilateral meetings with counterparts to discuss cooperation through education and trade within the region.
Singapore’s Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Second Minister for Education, Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman, visited Bangladesh on 12 and 13 May 2023 to attend the sixth Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) and for a bilateral visit at the invitation of Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen.
During the first day of his visit, Minister Maliki met with Education Minister Dipu Moni to discuss potential collaboration in Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET). He also had a fruitful discussion with Adviser to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Salman Fazlur Rahman, on opportunities for collaboration between Singapore and Bangladesh in areas such as agriculture, shipping, and trade.
On the second day of his visit, Minister Maliki congratulated Bangladesh for hosting a successful sixth Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) and delivered remarks on the importance of the Indian Ocean region in the global geostrategic landscape. He also reaffirmed the strong ties between Singapore and Bangladesh in a meeting with Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in trade and the economy.
Minister Maliki also had the opportunity to connect with other leaders from the region on the sidelines of the IOC. He had fruitful discussions with Bhutan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Dr Tandi Dorji and Nepal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Narayan Prakash Saud on bilateral relations and how to elevate cooperation in human resource and skills development.
